Enjoying Santa Barbara in one of their current styles: KINK hats!

Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 10.42.43 AMBrand to watch KIN/K hats was founded by twin sisters, Sara Brady and Ashley Cornil. I was introduced to them by a close friend, and have developed an obsession with their collection. KIN/ K is a mix of California cool and city sophistication redefining modern millinery.

Learn more about this hip line below, and check out all their collection at KinkHats.com

In the past few years, we have definitely seen the hat come back as a must have accessory, what prompted the two of you to start your own company?

We are so grateful hats are making a comeback and hope they are here to stay. We have always dreamed of owning a company together, where we could collaborate on the creative process and build a brand that we believe in. We fell in love with hats at an early age, but it wasn’t until we started playing with our style did we notice the lack of availability of modern hats. Hats are a niche accessory, but we saw an opportunity in the market and decided to go for it. We learned all we could about the history and process of making wool and straw hats, and fell in love with the blocking and finishing process. Shortly thereafter, KIN/K was formed and set up shop in our garage.

You are based in San Francisco, an on trend fashion city, who defines the Kin/K woman?

We don’t necessarily have a particular demographic in mind, but rather design for women who are comfortable in their own skin and are willing to take fashion risks. A hat is one of those pieces that has the ability to “wear you”. So having the confidence and “I don’t give a shit attitude” is key. We design in the hopes women feel authentic and beautiful when they put on a KIN/K.

The hats are not only beautiful, but are quite versatile, tell me a little more about that?

Thank you! Our latest collection features hand beaded crown bands that are removable and can be swapped out for different crown bands. We like to have a point of view in our designs but realize women like options and sometimes a naked hat is just as elegant.

How do you stay on trend in the changing world of fashion, and what can we expect to come next for you?

We used to worry about trends, but honestly it’s so hard to keep up with the every changing fashion tastemakers. We definitely try to stay on point with color trends, but typically leave the rest of the collection’s characteristic to the organic process of creating. We have a few collaborations in the works and are playing with some really experimental mediums. We aspire to push the boundaries of your typical topper. We are super excited to reveal them next month in NY.

I love the fact that your hats are made in San Francisco, how important is this in the industry today?

We design out of San Francisco and have our factory on the East Coast. Our beaded crown bands and metal pieces are made here in California. For us, it’s extremely important to be in close proximity to our partners because the process of production is crazy, arduous and extremely fickle. Constant calling, emails, checking in on product can drive you nuts. We also value the craftsmanship and high quality techniques of a US made product. We can stand behind the American hands working century old machines and can undoubtedly know we can deliver a high quality hat. It’s a really romantic process, from start to finish.

San Francisco is one of my favorite cities, as it is a definite mix of California girl meets the city, what are some of your favorite boutiques up there?

San Francisco definitely has a style all it’s own and women are experimenting more with style than ever. Typically, we head to Hayes Valley to shop the super cute boutiques. We love Rand+Statler, Acrimony and Steven Allen. For vintage we always find gems at the Painted Bird & No Shop in the Mission.

At the end of a long day, where do you like to relax and get a drink/food?

Our days usually end with a glass of wine and a home cooked meal. We love being in the kitchen so most nights are spent there with our husbands. Although, we do love a new favorite restaurant Reverb, which is just up the street from our studio. They have delicious cocktails and insanely glutinous fried chicken and waffles.

How to do Denim on Denim

There are no winter blues here when you can pull off the on trend denim on denim look. Something about the double-denim trend goes against everything we’ve been taught is correct about putting together an outfit. So while yes, you know denim on denim is having a moment right now, putting the look together can seem a bit intimidating.

Check out my tips and tricks below and a few of my favorite street style looks.

1. DO: Play with colors if you’re a total beginner. Start out by pairing different shades of denim together, like white jeans and a blue denim jacket, or black jeans and a chambray shirt.

2. DON’T: Wear denim accessories. Keep the jeans confined to your clothing.

3. DO: Use denim shades to flatter or hide body parts. As a general rule, lighter shades of denim draw attention to the body parts, while darker washes create a slimming effect.

4. DON’T: Wear a denim outfit that’s all the same weight or wash. You don’t want to look too “matchy-matchy”.

5. DO: Distress. Something about ripped jeans just lends itself well to the denim on denim look. So don’t be afraid to rip away.

6. DON’T: Look to Westerns for inspiration. Think of denim on denim, and images of cowboys likely come to mind, so that means staying away from accessories like cowboy boots, cowboy hats, bolo ties, and Western belts.

7. DO: Dress up your double denim. Don’t be afraid to elevate your outfit with luxe-looking items including statement heels or an amazing blazer.

Golden Globes Look for Less

Just like many of us, one of the other reasons that I love the award show season is for the fashion. It is such a fun time to watch the stars saunter down the red carpet in gorgeous gowns and jewelry. Many of these women are dressed by their stylists borrowing dresses from some of the world’s top designers.

Chances are you spotted some killer looks at the Golden Globes, and you can get some of these killer looks for a fraction of the price. If you have your own party or wedding come up look no further and get some of the looks for thousands less.
