Sports, Your Style

NBA Sideline Style with reporter Rebecca Haarlow

For those of you who know me well my other passion in life is sports, and growing up with an NBA father I have spent much of my life sitting on the side-lines cheering on teams. So it was only fitting that a few years ago I was introduced to another women who is not only a rocking reporter for the NBA and NFL, she has a passion for fashion just like myself. And so the friendship begins…..

Check out Rebecca Haarlow this Fall on the sidelines of college football around the county, I guarantee you she will be looking gorgeous!

  1. You have been in sports broadcasting for several years, how did you get your start in the field?
I was an intern for the Golden State Warriors and at my first game I thought I would be shuffling papers or grabbing coffee. Instead, I was given a recorder and sent into the locker room after the game to do interviews for the radio. I was scared out of my mind, but it was exciting. As an athlete myself, I was immediately hooked on the adrenaline rush of live television. I had no idea what kind of ride I was about to embark on, but I’ve had so many wonderful mentors, and enjoyed the journey along the way.
  1. When you are preparing for a game, tell us how you put together looks? Is it determined by sport, team colors, weather?
Dressing for TV is harder than it looks. Finding an outfit that enables you to run (literally sometimes) from sideline to sideline, that works with the weather, is comfortable and polished all at the same time is difficult to find. I’d describe my personal style as chic, but still a bit sporty. I tend to lean toward solid colors and clothes with pockets so you can stash anything from credentials to a phone or lip gloss.
  1. You always have an amazing glow on camera, what are you go to beauty products?
Whenever I’m in the makeup chair, I’m constantly asking for beauty secrets. The amazingly talented makeup artists at NFL Network introduced me to YSL Touche Eclat and it’s been my favorite product ever since. It covers everything from dark circles to blemishes, plus it works as a highlighter for contouring. On off days, I go makeup free and let my skin breathe.
  1. Who are some of your favorite designers for on camera, and what is your go to for travel – as we know you are on on the plane all the time.
On camera, Rachel Zoe is my favorite designer right now. Her style is chic and sophisticated with an edge. Plus, all of her clothes are long enough for me; I’m about 6’ in heels and no one wants to look like they’re dressing for a flood. 😉 I also love DVF, and Prada makes heels that are comfortable enough to wear all game long. Off camera, it’s all about comfort. I leave jeans or leggings, a t-shirt and chucks in the green room so I can change as soon as we wrap.
  1. What is one of the most memorable outfits that you wore and one of your most memorable sports experiences?
One of my favorite experiences in sports was being on the ice after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2013. Chicago scored 2 goals in 17 seconds to clinch the final in Boston and interviewing the players right after such an incredible game is something I’ll never forget. As for outfits, I was on the sideline for Monday Night Football a couple years back in Chicago and it was hands down the coldest game of my life. I’ve had a lot of cold college football or NFL games in places like Minnesota and Green Bay, but that night, it was so frigid it was hard to speak because the muscles in my face were frozen. I was wearing my favorite Rudsak parka, complete with hand warmers strategically placed all over my body, but it wasn’t enough. The temperature was some crazy negative number and I’ll never forget the guys back in the studio tossing it to me on the field with comments that I looked miserable and frozen. But you know what? That’s football in December in the Midwest, and I love it.
  1. Any favorite stores that you like to shop at around the globe or country
I wish I could say I have a bunch of favorites, but honestly I’ve turned into an online shopper. With so much travel, I have a ton of time in airports and on planes where I can multi-task. I love Gilt; they have great brands that work well on-camera. The best is arriving home from the road to a new box of new clothes that you ordered somewhere online a few NBA cities back.
